55-year-old Hope Island man charged after alleged stabbing at Sanctuary Cove

A man has been charged after an altercation that left one person stabbed in the back and two others injured at a Sanctuary Cove restaurant.

A man has been charged after an altercation that left one person stabbed in the back and two others injured at a Sanctuary Cove restaurant.

Emergency services were called to Destino restaurant on Masthead Way in Hope Island around 4.45pm on Wednesday after an alleged altercation between four men.

A Queensland Police statement said it was alleged a 54-year-old man was found with a stab wound on his back, a 60-year-old man sustained a laceration and a 58-year-old man was assaulted.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and took the 54-year-old and the 58-year-old to Gold Coast University Hospital.

Police then charged the 55-year-old Hope Island man with one count each of wounding and grievous bodily harm.

WHAT ALLEGEDLY HAPPENED

Multiple people have been injured including one with a stab wound to the back in a violent incident at swanky Sanctuary Cove’s retail hub, sparking a major police call-out.

A crime scene has been established at Masthead Way, with police cordoning off a bar in the main shopping strip and multiple ambulance crews including critical care teams at the scene.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said: “On arrival police encountered a man with a stab wound to his back – and two other men with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Those two men had not been stabbed, the QPS spokesman said.

Late on Wednesday night a Hope Island man, 55, was charged with wounding and grievous bodily harm.

He was remanded in custody to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Queensland Ambulance crews were called to the scene just before 5pm.

One man was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital under full lights and sirens with high-acuity care officers on-board in a critical condition with alleged stab wounds to the torso, a QAS spokesperson said.

A second patient was taken to Robina Hospital in a stable condition with “significant bruising” and a potential leg injury.

A third man had a laceration to the hand but was not taken to hospital.

Police have set up evidence markers inside Destino restaurant.

Neighbouring businesses and the walkway have been cordoned off and form part of the crime scene.

It’s understood there is a second crime scene that has been established in a nearby gated community.

A spokeswoman for Sanctuary Cove’s retail hub declined to comment.
