The M1 has been brought to a crawl on the Gold Coast with multiple car crashes causing kilometres of peak-hour delays.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said emergency services were called to a two-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes near Gaven about 8.30am on Friday morning.
As crews arrived on scene another three-vehicle crash occurred on the M1 in close proximity.
Paramedics assessed five patients across both scenes with only one person requiring transport to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition suffering from chest pain.
As tow trucks worked to clear the five cars from the motorway, heavy delays had settled in with southbound traffic bumper-to-bumper for about 10km from the Dreamworld exit near Coomera to the Smith St Motorway off ramp.
The QAS spokeswoman said motorists were being advised that delays were expected to take some time to clear and should plan ahead.
