Man and woman killed in fatal motorcycle crash in Helensvale

A HORROR motorcycle crash which killed two people on the Gold Coast on Thursday morning has left three young boys without a mother.

Lisa Hau, 29, from Helensvale, was just a heartbreaking 400 metres from home when the bike she was a passenger on lost control and left the road.

Ms Hau, along with a 33-year-old Stafford Heights man, had been riding south on Discovery Drive at 2.20am when the bike slammed into a metal bus stop pole before flying 30 metres down the road, coming to land on a fence.

Neither were wearing helmets or protective clothing.

Both died instantly.

Neighbours said Ms Hau had lived in Helensvale with her three young children for around 12 months, and was joined by the man, from Brisbane, several months ago.

The stay-at-home mum and “alternative healer” ran psychic, Reiki and healing sessions from the house.

Ms Hau was a regular sight in the neighbourhood pushing her kids on the swings and going for walks, neighbours said.

The road bike, a 1998 Honda CBR series model, was a new addition in the last month.

“We would see him ride the motorbike up and down the road and she would follow in the car with the kids,” one neighbour told The Gold Coast Bulletin.

Family members from Brisbane spent most of the day speaking with police at the station, before taking the young boys back home to collect belongings.

Meanwhile residents are still coming to terms with the confronting aftermath of the scene just a few hundred metres down the road.

Locals rushed out to help after hearing engine noise and a loud bang.

Neighbour Gary Appleby, who works as a first aid responder, said the distressing scene was burned into the memories of the residents who witnessed it.

“I can still see the pictures,” he said, “there were body parts … I checked his pulse but he was obviously deceased, then I saw the girl further away,” he said.

“It gives me the shakes, it was a violent death, it was horrible, a lot of people who had come out to help were very upset.”

Multiple witnesses report the pair were not wearing any helmets or protective clothing when they crashed.

“The girl was wearing a blouse and maybe a skirt I think, and the guy was just in shorts and a T-shirt,” Mr Appleby said.

Neighbours reported hearing the bike travelling around the area at speed before the fatal crash.

Police are investigating if speed and the wet roads were a factor.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said there was nothing to suggest the bike had been stolen and that no other vehicles were involved.

Neighbours said they had seen several cars lose control on the same corner in the past.

“Over the years there’s been three or four accidents, just bruises and broken bones mostly with speed being a problem,” one said.

Police are appealing to anyone that may have been in the area at the time and may have dashcam to contact them.

Discovery Drive was closed to traffic this morning but has since reopened.

The couple’s deaths bring the state’s 2019 road toll to five, with three of those killed involved in motorbike accidents.
