A young Townsville woman says cops told her to get a baseball bat in case car thieves return after they “violated” her home and bedroom while she was alone.

Mount Louisa resident Rylie Hansen, 22, woke up to find her home had been broken into and her car stolen during the early hours of Friday, July 29.

The thieves dumped her Toyota Camry Sportivo soon after and set it on fire on Mitchell St, North Ward, about 5.20am.

The 22-year-old said she was devastated to lose her only means of transport for work.

“My house was completely ransacked — they went through everything,” she said.

“All the drawers were open, and so were all the doors, including the one to my bedroom.”

“When I realised they had been in my room, I felt violated.

“It’s already very scary being a female on your own, but it’s worse knowing someone’s come in and seen me sleeping.”

Ms Hansen said she no longer felt safe staying at home alone and was getting friends to stay over until her housemates return.

Her stolen car was dumped and set alight on Mitchell St, North Ward.

“They still have my house keys and all the garage remote keys, so we’ve had to unplug all that and change the locks,” she said.

“It’s just scary and the police said the odds are likely they’ll be back.

“They said maybe you should get a bat for next to your bed.”

Ms Hansen said police told her they think her home was scouted out by thieves before they broke in.

“The odds for them to only come to my house over any of the family houses next to me was quite weird — it wasn’t a coincidence,” she said.

“The police said it wouldn’t be shocking if the offenders have been coming past during the day, scouting who’s been coming home and who’s alone.”

Police investigations into this incident are ongoing, with no arrests made yet.
