A woman in her 80s has tragically died after being struck by a garbage truck on a quiet Bushland Beach street earlier on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Daintree Drive, around 12.15pm.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said a team of paramedics were called to the scene around midday and found the woman with “life threatening” injuries at a truck v pedestrian incident.

The woman was declared deceased at the scene, police confirmed.

The woman was 85-years-old, it’s not yet known how she was struck by the garbage truck.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The Forensic Crash Unit are assisting Workplace Health and Safety Queensland with their investigations.

Daintree Drive is a looped road in the Bushland Beach suburbs, with over 160 homes built along it.

The fatal accident occurred at the southern intersection between Daintree Dr and Marina Dr.

The wheelie bins around the accident were all still full, indicating the garbage truck had just turned onto Daintree Dr when the accident occured.

Residents in nearby houses said the incident was too serious to comment on.

Most were out at work when the fatal incident occured.

After police confirmed that the woman’s next of kin had been notified of her death, Townsville City Council immediately sent out a statement.

Council CEO Joe McCabe said he was aware of a serious incident involving one of council’s waste trucks and a member of the public.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of those impacted,” Mr McCabe said.

“Safety is council’s number one priority - for our staff, our contractors and for the broader community.”

Mr McCabe said his council was cooperating fully with the investigations currently being performed by the police and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland.

“Out of respect for those involved and due to the ongoing investigations, Council will not be making further comment at this time.”
