Townsville Highway Patrol have caught a man allegedly driving while more than twice the legal alcohol limit and fined him for driving 44kms over the speed limit.
An officer from the Townsville Highway Patrol pulled the man over at around 10.35pm on July 5 on the Ring Road in Douglas, after he was allegedly driving at 144kms in a 100km zone.
The 42-year-old Rasmussen man was then given a random breath test and returned a BAC of 0.108, more than twice the legal limit.
He received an immediate licence suspension, a traffic infringement notice for speeding and was charged with mid-range drink driving.
He is due to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on July 24.
Townsville Highway Patrol Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Robert Nalder said it was “appalling” to see such dangerous driving, especially when a person is also drink-driving.
“Six people have tragically lost their lives in Townsville District this year and 141 have died on Queensland roads, with many of these fatalities the result of speeding or dangerous driving,” he said.
He reminded drivers that police will be out and about intercepting those doing the wrong thing.
“Police are continuing our highly visible and proactive presence on the roads these school holidays, under Operation X-Ray Cold Snap,” he said.
“We are targeting dangerous driving behaviours and the Fatal Five – speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and distraction.
Operation X-Ray Cold Snap runs until Sunday July 13, and is focused on saving lives and preventing road trauma.
