The East Coast Derby Dolls are looking for new members at the Runaway Bay Indoor Sports Centre.

All genders and ages are welcome to join this “whirlwind” sport as the East Coast Derby Dolls hold a mid-year new member intake during this month and next at the Runaway Bay Indoor Sports Centre. Here is how you can get involved.

Derby Dolls roll for orang-utans

THE East Coast Derby Dolls are holding a mid-year new member intake during this month and next at the Runaway Bay Indoor Sports Centre.

Derby Dolls member Lucy Fouche, aka, Lucious Luci from Coombabah, has been a member for four years as a skater and a blocker and said their member base of 25 was looking to expand.

“Our Club is extremely diverse in age and personalities but it somehow meshes into this whirl of fun and sport,” said

“We are looking for new fresh skaters, referees and non skating officials to allow our club to grow and maintain its place as the only Gold Coast based roller derby league.

“Our other local competition are Tweed based and Brisbane Based.”

The 50-year-old said joining a roller derby team was a great social opportunity.

“Basic skating is sort of necessary but we will teach you the rest,” she said.

“We have people playing with us currently that literally could not skate a year ago.

“We have female members at present, however all genders are welcome as skating and non skating officials and ages range from 17 to 51.

“We have it all.”

The Derby Dolls last tournament saw them skate against teams from Canberra, Tasmania and the Central NSW Coast.

“We are now in training for the next large tournament in October,” she said.

The Gold Coast Derby Dolls train twice a week on Wednesday and Fridays from 7pm and compete locally each month.

The intake dates are July 31, August 2 and August 7 at the Runaway Bay Indoor Sports Centre, Sports Drive, Runaway Bay.
