A PROPOSED development application could see blasting and hauling at the Oxenford quarry continue for “more than 100 years”, despite the quarry works scheduled to wrap up in 2022.
Residents Against the Oxenford Quarry Expansion have blasted the application which reveals a cross section of the development plan seeking to go beyond 95m below the Coomera River level.
OXENFORD QUARRY EXPANSION OPPOSED BY RESIDENTS CONCERNED BY DUST PARTICLES AND BLASTING
The current quarry agreement states quarrying must not go below 10m above the Coomera water level.
A spokesman from the group said Nucrush was proposing to “destroy” 245 metres below the ridge line.
“They have said they would rehabilitate as they go, however, they agreed this back in 1992 but haven’t done any in the intervening 27 years,” he said.
“They are currently caving out the hill to the East side. However, their current agreement states that this should not be visible outside of the Quarry confines.

“Unfortunately the scarring is highly visible for miles around contrary to the agreement.”
The objection submission also shows how the Nucrush quarry is currently extracting an average of 1,026,000 tonnes per annum despite the maximum permitted being 1,000,000 under their Environmental Protection Permit.
Signs near the site advise the public that the Nucrush Quarry at Oxenford will continue blasting until 2050, despite neighbours being told work was scheduled to stop on February 15, 2022.
Nucrush was given from 1992 until 2017 to complete quarry works, which was then extended for an additional five years.
