CAN you hear the rumble?

The Gold Coast is set to play host to the biggest roller derby tournament in the Asia-Pacific region. The Royal Rumble Tournament will take place during three days from Saturday at the Runaway Bay indoor stadium and will see 18 teams strap on their skates and compete for world rankings.

With visiting skaters from all around Australia and New Zealand, the event will be the largest Asia-Pacific derby tournament this year.

“Queensland is a real epicentre of Australian roller derby and we are really looking forward to creating an event that will bring some of the best skaters in Australia and New Zealand to the Coast,” said event organiser Rosie Richards, of Paradise City Roller Derby.

Paradise City Roller Derby team member Ricky ‘Bang Bang’ Beetham, who juggles her hectic training schedule with running her Coolangatta beauty salon aptly named Bang Bang Beauty, said tournaments were always a highlight.

“I love the challenge of backing up your games and being able to learn and quickly evolving as a team throughout the tournament,” she said.

The event will be open from 8.30am-10pm, Saturday to Monday. Entry $15 and children under 12 free.
