Friends of Federation Walk will start its 18th year with a community planting this Sunday

IT may be another year, but Friends of Federation Walk are determined to plant the seed of a happy 2016 despite fires and growing development interest at the Spit.

IT may be another year, but Lyn Wright is determined to plant the seed of a happy 2016.

The head of the Friends of Federation Walk, Ms Wright is set to plough into the group’s 18th year with the opening community planting of 2016 this Sunday.

But with The Spit expected to draw increasing attention from developers and prone to fires, it could be a long year for the volunteer group.

Ms Wright said since the FFW was started as a subcommittee of the Main Beach Progress Association in 1998 it had planted more than 100,000 coastal natives on The Spit.

“But we have had so many fires that some areas have ben replanted four or five times,” she said.

“Because all our plants are natives that means the area often thrives after a fire.”

However, she said the threat of encroaching development and traffic access could be the biggest threat to the area.

“The whole premise of Federation Walk was to create a place people could care for and appreciate and maintain for the benefit of the community,” she said.

“We created the pathway so people could enjoy the walk and now you can hardly see where the plantings have been because of the way things have grown.

“Basically the problem we’ve got as far as Sunland Mariners Cove development goes is the suggestion they could build a cement path on the Oceanway at Federation Walk.

“They have never discussed this with us.”

She said the group was on the hunt for new members.

“We’re forever changing and it needs young people and needs vibrant people.

“We have got some people who have been doing plantings for 15 years.”
