“G, O, GG, O” — don’t be surprised if you hear the phrase from the well-known television commercial about Goggomobils at lot at this year’s Cooly Rocks On festival in June.
The unusual little cars will be among the star attractions celebrating 60 years since they first were seen on the roads and their creator Bill Buckle will be a special guest of honour during the festival.
The countdown is well and truly on for the nostalgia festival which will run from June 5-9 at Coolangatta and Connecting Southern Gold Coast CEO Peter Doggett said the 2019 event was shaping up to be bigger and better than ever.
“We will have access back to Queen Elizabeth Park on the Coolangatta foreshore which means we can contain the festival within the Coolangatta precinct,” Mr Doggett said.
“Cooly Rocks will stretch from Kirra Hill to Greenmount and back through Griffith St so we will be able to generate plenty of atmosphere in a defined area.
“We have decided to withdraw from the Jack Evans Boat Harbour in Tweed Heads simply because of the cost of servicing the area and we will focus on providing more entertainment through our outdoor stages at Greenmount, Griffith Street and Queen Elizabeth Park.”
Mr Doggett said there had been plenty of interest from various car clubs want tiny to participate and he hard received more than 500 entries for the Show ‘n Shine already.
“The Goggomobils will feature around the festival including the street parade and I’m sure they will be a hit with the crowds,” he said.
NEW ERA FOR COOLY ROCKS ON AS 70S CARS SWING INTO THE FESTIVAL
“We have expanded our car sections to include vehicles made up until 1978 so that will add a growing component to the car displays.
“Our street parade grand marshall will be V8 Supercar legend Jim Richards and among the featured cars will be one of Peter Brock’s Bathurst winning vehicles.”
This year’s headline artist will be Los Angeles rockabilly exponent Marcel Riesco who will also deliver a Roy Orbison — inspired show as well.
“Marcel is extremely versatile so we hope he can factors in shows featuring his rock and roll 50s and 60s music and that of “The big O’.
“We will also have a host of Aussie rock ‘n’ rollers such as Tony Worsley and the Blue Jays, The Sonics, Dennis Knight, a Tribute to The Deltones and of course our Cooly Rocks on ambassador Issi Dye.”
Expressions of interest are now being sought for stallholders and applications will open shortly for festival volunteers.
