PET owners at Helensvale and Tallebudgera are urged to be on high alert after the RSPCA confirms a spate of dog baiting incidents across the Gold Coast.

RSPCA spokesman Micheal Beatty said there had been several recent dog baiting attempts on the Gold Coast and RSPCA had been made aware of the baits left for unsuspecting dogs at Lismore Drive at Helensvale as well as the dog beach at Tallebudgera.

“Our inspector is looking into this particular baiting event,” he said.

“We’ve had a lot of reports of baiting,” he said.

“People need to take their dog to the vet ASAP if it shows symptoms of poisoning and report the location of the bait to the Gold Coast City Council.”

Christopher Murray was walking his dog at the Tallebudgera Dog Beach between the beach access near the rock wall path way when he discovered a dog bait in the sand.

“My dog sniffed it and moved on luckily, and I picked it up,” he said.

“But it was obviously targeted. What gutless morons would do this?

“This was sitting on top of the sand, on the beach., 20 metres from the path, where every dog walks past.”

Dr Heyn de Kock from VetLove Helensvale said a client had also alerted the clinic about the potentially fatal baits set down at Lismore Drive at Helensvale and warned dog owners to keep an eye on lawns, gardens and neighbours dogs.

“The baits look like meat balls with a green tinge and green flecks which are laced with rat poison,”.

“Dog walkers in the area need to be vigilant when out walking.”

He said signs your dog had been baited included being quieter than usual, pale or dark spots on gums, bruising of the skin, red or brown coloured urine, bleeding from the nose, vomiting or diarrhoea, difficulty breathing, seizures or tremors.

“The best way to prevent any of these symptoms is for us to induce vomiting immediately.” he said.

Louise Toll lost her “little man” Jonah recently and wanted to warn others the symptoms of poisoning are not always obvious.

“If you see something that looks like a bruise on their belly do not hesitate to call a vet,” she said.

“Jonah was bleeding internally, but we couldn’t tell as he was such a fluff ball.

“This was discovered after a quick wash and a shave.”

The vet who treated Jonah told Ms Toll that her dog had eaten rat poison which she believed was thrown over her fence in a deliberate and targeted attack.
Another local Lynnelle Harrison said she had found dog baits on the footpath last week on Greenacre Drive at Arundel.
