Coronavirus: Australia's $2.3 billion epidemic

MORE than 1000 jobs are now on offer to Gold Coast students as part of a city wide response to attract those studying to the glitter strip.

The groundbreaking new initiative launched on Tuesday by Study Gold Coast, Gold Coast Student Jobs aims to boost student attraction and graduate retention locally.

The brand new platform aggregates all available jobs, work experience placements and internships for students and recent graduates in one place.

Local businesses can also advertise their available positions for free.

The job opportunities are then checked by Study GC staff to ensure that the content is relevant to ensure they fit the bill, and are then launched on the easily searchable site.

CEO Alfred Slogrove said the platform is available to any Gold Coast student or graduate.

“In this climate we are pleased to unveil something that will connect those learning with employment opportunities,” Mr Slogrove.

“Students can use the site to search for jobs, upload their CV for employers to peruse and find talent.

“This means we are linking those already on the Gold Coast directly with employers.”

“We believe this initiative will be a game changer for student employability and employers wanting to source candidates leading to better employment outcomes for all.”

“For businesses alone I think it will be a big help. Currently they would have to pay around $700 to advertise a job online, this way they can advertise for free. Every little thing helps.”

With over 200,000 Gold Coast residents participating in education and training Mr Slogrove believes prospective employers are spoiled for choice.

“While some businesses like our hotels and the airport have had to turn off their internship program, we are using this to make sure people are aware of the opportunities available.

‘It is important we continue to train up the next generation and safeguard a good quality of talented people.

“I also believe this will help with them cities reputation, people want to know they will have a quality education experience and will be able to support themselves into the future.”

“It is initiative like this that will help use set ourselves apart from other education destinations.”

The launch comes after the organisation helped deliver 30,000 food relief packs to support international students over the last six months.

HOW TO GET PAID TO STUDY ON THE GOLD COAST

OUT-OF-TOWN university students will receive a bonus worth over $3500 if they opt to study on the Gold Coast.

Study Gold Coast is offering the carrot to 200 domestic and international students in a bid to reinvigorate a COVID-hit education sector.

The first-of-its-kind Your Next Move campaign will pay students’ accommodation for 10 weeks when they move the Gold Coast.

The bid comes off the back of a mass downturn in the education sector. Because of COVID border closures many universities have suffered funding losses of about 30 per cent and staff cuts.

The education sector employs almost 30,000 people on the Gold Coast.

The remaining 300,000 international students still in Australia have become a particularly coveted market for the sector, with the fees of each international student worth about three times that of a domestic student.

Study Gold Coast CEO Alfred Slogrove said the initiative was timely for the city.

“The grant supports local student accommodation providers and homestay families, many of whom have struggled through the business downturn during COVID-19,” Mr Slogrove said.

“International and domestic students right across the country are feeling particularly vulnerable right now. The Gold Coast education and training sector has gone to extraordinary lengths to support our students during this crisis and students are looking for a safe destination that will support them at this time.”

Up to 200 grants will be made available to new domestic and international students who choose to enrol on the Gold Coast.

Students currently unable to come to the city through border closures will still be able to apply. Some domestic students may have to quarantine and while international students may not yet be able to travel, they will be encouraged to start online study and claim their grant when they arrive on the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast City councillor Brooke Patterson said the initiative would provide a boost to the city’s economy.

“As the fastest-growing economic driver of the city, pre-COVID the education and training sector was contributing $1.9 billion to the local economy,” she said. “The approach of Study Gold Coast ensures we protect livelihoods into the future.”

As a bonus, the grant also includes a Village Roadshow “One Pass”, allowing each student 12 months unlimited access to Sea World, Movie World, Wet’n’Wild and Paradise Country.

Your Next Move is part of Study Gold Coast’s three-stage recovery plan to reinvigorate the city’s education and training sector.
