This suburban Gold Coast home is famous for always having one of the city’s most dazzling Christmas displays. But this year’s plans have been thrown into chaos.

AN Upper Coomera family have been left “heartbroken” after yesterday’s ferocious flash storm destroyed thousands of dollars worth of Christmas light decorations.

The family’s 26 Jagera Drive home draws thousands of people every year to check out the dazzling display.

But yesterday a large number of lights and all seven of the display’s glitzy cherry blossom trees were blown over and smashed.

The family had entered the City of Gold Coast Christmas Lights Competition – which is being judged tonight – but no longer have a display.

Homeowner Narelle Keevers said her husband has desperately tried to salvage the expensive decorations.

“He is so heartbroken he can’t even talk about it,” Mrs Keevers said.

“He has been outside all morning trying to fix them with zip ties and we have arranged for an electrician to come by this afternoon to see what he can do.”

Mr Keevers starts decorating the house months before Christmas, spending more than 300 hours on the display each year.

He has spent so much money his wife claims he no longer tells her, but he does it for a good reason.

“He’s so passionate about his lights because he loves how many people come around to view them. And our three kids love it too,” Mrs Keeves said.

“We get about a thousand of people a night on the weekends.”

The smashed cherry blossom trees – which are worth thousands of dollars – won’t be able to be replaced as they are no longer manufactured.
