Arrest after alleged property crime in Nhulunbuy

A Top End town has been left with one less ambulance after the vehicle was allegedly damaged during a spate of overnight crime.

St John NT Territory Response Manager Craig Garraway said he was “disappointed” for remote paramedics after the emergency vehicle’s panels, windows, and mirrors were allegedly smashed and damaged on Saturday night.

“That vehicle’s going to be off the road for a considerable amount of time,” Mr Garraway said.

An NT Police spokesman said a 28-year-old man was arrested in relation to the incident.

He said emergency services had been responding to an alleged domestic violence incident.

“He has been charged with aggravated assault and for criminal damage caused to an ambulance,“ the spokesman said.

“He was also remanded and will appear in court tomorrow (Tuesday).”

In a separate incident on the same night, Mr Garraway said a senior paramedic’s home was allegedly broken into and a number of personal items were stolen.

He said the paramedic had not been home so was uninjured.

An NT Police spokesman said an 18-year-old man had been arrested in relation to the incident as well as other property offences at Nhulunbuy businesses and residences.

He said the man would appear in the Darwin Local Court on Tuesday.
