THEY’RE young, ambitious and female – meet the women running The Star Gold Coast and the company’s $400 million expansion.
Trailblazing women making tracks in a male-dominated industry, Jessica Mellor and Jaime Cali are the kind of women being recognised and championed in the Harvey Norman Women of the Year awards.
Ms Mellor is the chief operating officer of The Star Gold Coast, leading a team of more than 2800.
Appointed in June last year, Ms Mellor, 34, is The Star Gold Coast’s youngest and first female COO and directs staff across The Star’s accommodation, residences and entertainment areas.
She will also be in charge of staff at the Dorsett hotel tower, the new 53-storey structure expected to open in 2022.

ECONOMICS IMPROVING FOR WOMEN, STILL A WAY TO GO
“One of the female leaders here has worked in this business since day one. Her daughter also works at The Star Gold Coast. She said to me: ‘Since you came into this role, I believe that my daughter has a career here. I never believed that I would see a woman sitting in that chair.’ ”
Ms Cali is the Destination Gold Coast Consortium project director, overseeing the build of The Dorsett and planning for the future four towers, a $2 billion-plus construction.
The Dorsett tower will create hundreds of new roles in tourism and hospitality, with new opportunities for women looking to grow their careers.
“What I try to bring is honesty, integrity and just being true to myself. I have a huge passion for architecture and seeing the changing landscape of cities,” she said.
