The Godra: Crows legend Tony Modra has burger named in his honour, and it’s about time

A CBD restaurant has created a new burger for Adelaide Crows legend Tony Modra – all we can say, it’s about time.

It’s been 20 years since Tony Modra retired from AFL footy, but here’s proof that the Adelaide Football Club legend is still up there with the best of them.

The cult figure, who made his mark in the 1990s and holds the record as the only Crow to have kicked more than 100 goals in a season, has just had a burger named in his honour. Bread and Bone, in the CBD, is launching the Godra on Wednesday.

Godra, of course, is the nickname Modra was given because of the fan hysteria surrounding the high-flying full forward. He was famous for his movie-star looks and theatrical marking ability.

The Godra, which will be available until the end of the month, has a spiced pork and fennel sausage roll – rather than a patty.

“As well as being a fan of a good pastry, Tony Modra is one of South Australia’s ultimate goal kicking legends,” Bread and Bone chef Joel Stephens said.

“So, we figured for the burger we’d play on the rhyming slang footy lingo for a goal – being a ‘sausage roll’.”

Modra said: “I don’t know what I love more – kicking them or eating them.”

The Godra’s other fillings include caramelised onion, smoky bacon, tomato sauce and kewpie mayonnaise.

It’s not the first time Modra has had a dish named after him. Schnithouse also has a “Godra schnitzel” topped with onion rings, kransky and prawn skewers and served with a “champagne cream sauce”.
