SA best burgers: Where to find Adelaide’s best on National Burger Day

In honour of National Burger Day we’ve found South Australia’s best spots for a juicy burger. Beef, chicken, veggie – they’re all good. See the full list of winners here.

SA’s best burger joint revealed

Peel Street institution Bread & Bone has taken the title of the best burger in South Australia.

The CBD restaurant won the city vote in our latest poll before going on to take the state title.

Bread & Bone head chef Joel Stephens said he was chuffed to take out the win, especially with competition being so stiff in the burger arena.

Bread & Bone has been running for eight years and always draws in a good crowd.

The restaurant is known for its use of a wood grill for its burgers, hot dogs and fried chicken.

“Burgers would be our biggest draw,” Mr Stephens said.

Two of the most popular Bread & Bone burgers are the B&B – with beef, smoked bacon, cheese, tomato, lettuce, caramelised onion and pickles, and the 300 – with a 300g beef patty, double cheese, lettuce, pickles, red onion, caramelised onion, onion rings, mustard and special sauce.

A vegetarian burger is also popular, with soy mushroom, crumbed haloumi, kewpie, pickled red onion and watercress.

Mr Stephens said Bread & Bone draws patrons from across the state and the business prides itself on the use of quality, seasonal produce.

“I would say it’s the wood grill (that makes Bread & Bone stand out), not many places are using it for burgers,” Mr Stephens said.

Aberfoyle Park restaurant Fudd’s was voted second best burger joint in the state with Norwood’s Nordburger rounding out the top three.

Go to Croydon Park burger joint 127 Days over the weekend, and chances are you’ll find it packed to the brim.

The restaurant has been running for seven years, with Jackie Au running it for the past three years.

One aspect that sets 127 Days apart is its daily specials, which this week included a burger with panko crumbed barramundi fillet, coleslaw, rocket and house-made tartare.

Ms Au said two of 127 Days’ most popular burgers were the Mushroom Melt – with Angus beef, bacon, rocket, roasted mushrooms, caramelised onions, cheese and truffle aioli – and the Southern Fried Chicken – with buttermilk fried chicken, bacon, fig jam, lettuce, tomato, BBQ sauce and chipotle aioli.

Chef Neil Brown said Tuesday to Thursday, 127 Days does ‘throwback’ specials of dishes of the day that have proven popular, while Friday and Saturdays he comes up with new creations.

“We don’t skimp on our ingredients,” he said.

The restaurant is known for its outrageously sized specials like the The Gladiator which includes six beef patties, four pieces of fried chicken, six rashers of bacon, onion rings and cheese but there are plenty of options for those who are a little less hungry.

Earning itself more than 23 per cent of votes for the North, this young up-and-comer will be one to watch in the years to come.

Head chef Adrian Breschi said the secret to success is simple.

The Aberfoyle Park eatery focuses on keeping its burger offering traditional and using the best local produce and ingredients.

“It’s good, fresh, consistent food and the local support is immense in this area so we try and keep the locals happy,” Mr Breschi said.

“We try to push the boundaries on flavour without challenging people too much.”

The Fudd’s team pair local beers with their constantly changing burger specials like this week’s offering – The Carnivore – a beef burger with cheese, bacon, chorizo, onion rings and a barbecue bourbon sauce.

Fudd’s received 40 per cent of votes in the southern region and placed second in SA.

With almost 30 per cent of votes for the East, Inner South and Hills, the Parade store has earned itself the title of best in the east and third best in the state.

Mr Bradden said their motto of keeping it simple, classic and fresh had earned it favour with Hills locals.

“It’s a combination of execution, cooking fresh to order with fresh produce and less is more that really works for us,” he said.

Home to the ‘Arnourmous Burger’, the Arno Bay Jetty Cafe has seen many try and fail to attempt to eat the 15cm burger that contains what some would call a mild heart attack.

“It has onion, two slices of cheese, a beef burger, two eggs, four pieces of bacon, two pieces of pineapple, four pieces of tomato, four pieces of beetroot and lettuce in the bun,” Ms Green said.

“Some try to eat the whole lot themselves, others cut it in half and share it but I actually really enjoy cooking them, they are good to cook and people love it still to this day.”

Everything on the Natural Born Grillers’ menu has a quirky twist.

“Things that you wouldn’t normally think would be in a burger we like to chuck it in a burger and see how it goes,” Mr Hull said.
