A man who allegedly raped a woman in an alleyway told an officer during arrest she’d agreed to have sex with him for money, a court heard.

Shane Anthony Gray, 23, is standing trial in the District Court this week after claiming the sex in the alleyway was consensual.

A prosecutor told the court in their opening statement that Mr Gray met the alleged victim in the early hours of the morning at the Dog and Duck on Hindley St in April 2022.

The court heard Mr Gray and the 19-year-old alleged victim had never met in person before the night the alleged rape took place.

The prosecutor said Mr Gray and the woman were drinking and chatting before they had consensual sex in the disabled toilet.

Security then knocked on the door and evicted the duo from the venue.

The court heard Mr Gray then took the alleged victim around the corner of an alcove near the TAFE car park and had sex with her again.

“During that episode of penile-vaginal intercourse, it hurt, she told him to stop but he didn’t until he had finished,” the prosecutor said.

In a video played to the court of Mr Gray’s arrest shown by a body worn camera, he told an officer he went up to the alleged victim in the nightclub and asked if she wanted to f***.

“I wanted a root because I’ve been bricklaying six days a week,” he said.

“I’ve been working so hard, guys release their hormones – that’s what they wanna do.”

An evidently intoxicated Mr Gray told the officer the alleged victim had agreed to have sex with him for money.

“Why would I send her $120? Unless for what, a service?” he said.

“And then we’re rooting and then she was saying she was bleeding.”

Mr Gray then tells the officer the alleged victim was playing the “rape game” and he had permission.

“With f***ing rape you don’t f*** around with that s***, I’m gonna sue the f*** out her,” he said.

The court heard the alleged victim was at home a few days later when she received a call from a no caller ID number, with Mr Gray allegedly telling her to drop the charge.

Mr Gray, of Munno Para, pleaded not guilty to rape.

The trial before a jury continues.
