A tattoo artist and his friend have been locked up after they held a terrified man hostage for several hours before plotting his murder.

Daniel Wayne Bland, 29, and Brad Andrew Roberts, 30, were slammed by a judge for taking the law into their own hands and seeking revenge over an unfounded belief.

During sentencing on Thursday, the District Court heard the victim was approached by Bland, who he had met previously, on January 1, 2023 and offered him and his group a lift.

The court heard the victim was lured to the Elizabeth Grove house where upon entry he was immediately assaulted by Bland with a golf club.

Bland, Roberts and another man began punching the victim in the head.

The victim was then bound with duct tape and tied up with rope.

“The three of you took turns dragging the victim around by the rope and calling him a dog,” Judge Simon Stretton said.

“You Mr Bland took a spoon and started attempting to gouge the victim’s eye out of its socket.”

The court heard Bland only stopped when Roberts told him he’d be locked up for a long time if he did it.

“Whilst he was tied up the victim heard you all talking about what you’d do to him, including stabbing him, tying him to a jetty, cutting off his penis or burning him,” Judge Stretton said.

“You Mr Bland boiled the kettle and told the victim that you wanted to pour it into his eye.”

The victim, who was detained for six hours, eventually managed to escape when he went to a nearby property and called police around 7am.

The court heard the victim suffered bruising and swelling, a haemorrhage to his eye and lost three teeth as a result of the attack.

Police later located Bland in the victim’s stolen car.

In a victim impact statement read to the court earlier this month the victim said his elderly mother almost collapsed when she heard the news that he was in hospital after the assault.

“I could imagine the horror for me as she has already had to attend the funerals of two of her children,” he said.

“I can never forgive or forget his actions or his plan to murder me.”

Bland, of Adelaide and Roberts, of Moorook, pleaded guilty to false imprisonment and assault causing harm, relating to the offending in January 2023.

The court heard men’s co-accused, Chloe Watkins, 25, had pleaded not guilty to the charges but had absconded.

The court heard Bland believed the victim had sexually assaulted a woman known to him, but Judge Stretton said he couldn’t accept that claim as there was no evidence produced to the court.

The court heard Bland, a former tattoo artist, and Roberts were fuelled by methamphetamine during the attack.

Judge Stretton said what the duo did was reprehensible and the victim would have been terrified.

“This kind of vigilante violence has no place in a civilised community,” he said.

Bland was sentenced to four years and three months, with a non-parole period of two years and six months.

The sentence was backdated to January 2, 2023.

Roberts was sentenced to four years and two months, with a non-parole period of one year and 10 months which was backdated to February 2, 2023.
