Playford Alive’s Newton Boulevard extension provides hope for Curtis Rd traffic fix, govt says

It’s labelled one of the worst roads in SA, but a house estate in Adelaide’s north could soon “alleviate” some of the traffic congestion.

An extension linking a northern suburbs housing development with a nearby street would “considerably reduce the pressure” on one of the state’s worst roads, housing minister Nick Champion says.

Playford Alive’s Newton Boulevard will be connected with Stebonheath Rd and open to traffic as early as next month – something Mr Champion believes will help ease congestion on notorious Curtis Rd.

“As part of this development, the state government is extending Newton Boulevard to Stebonheath Rd which will alleviate some of the congestion on nearby Curtis Rd,” Mr Champion said.

“This will considerably reduce the pressure on nearby Curtis Rd.”

A $30m dual-lane roundabout at the intersection of Curtis and Heaslip roads, in Angle Vale, was announced late last year after years of tireless campaigning by locals.

The major fix follows the announcement of Newton Boulevard – a 16.6ha project comprising

of 282 houses – selling out after “surging interest” from buyers.

Of its 282 allotments, 175 are priced at – or below – the affordable land price point of $222,750 to help first-time buyers get their foot in the door sooner.

New residents are expected to move into their homes by early to mid-2026.

Earlier this month, a report into a proposed 1300-home estate revealed Curtis Rd was over capacity and required a “full duplication” to cope with new housing.

It said the Curtis Rd/Main North Rd intersection would likely need an overpass even without a proposed 71ha housing estate – which would one day be home to thousands of people, five apartment blocks up to six storeys, a huge park and aged-care centre.

Speaking on Newton Boulevard, Member for Light Tony Piccolo said the development would “improve traffic flow in the area”, while benefiting “the green open space in the community with new public amenities”.
