Didi driver filmed in terrifying road-rage attack

The father of a girl involved in a terrifying road-rage incident with an enraged male Didi driver insists women “shouldn’t have to deal” with the abuse his daughter went through.

The attack, captured on dashcam on Wednesday, shows the man exiting his vehicle while stopped at Onkaparinga Heights roundabout, before tearing a windscreen wiper off another car and swearing at its driver – a young 21-year-old woman.

Adam Smith, the victim’s dad, posted the video to Facebook – urging the community to “call out” similar behaviour.

“It’s a lot for a young lady to deal with,” Mr Smith told the Advertiser. “I’m hoping for the future of ladies in our lives, not only my daughter but also my granddaughter, that they don’t have to deal with abuse and terror from males within their lives or the general public.

“Males like this one need to be called out and shown publicly that society will not, and should not, tolerate this behavior.

“My daughter should be fine in time, but given what has happened she is very wary and cautious. She has support around her and she won’t be traveling alone for a while.”

The Advertiser understands the incident was sparked three minutes prior to the attack when the female driver merged in front of the Didi driver.

The man has been charged with property damage and was summonsed to appear in court at a later date, police said.

The man declined to comment to The Advertiser.

Stills taken from the full dashcam footage, which was also posted to Facebook, include captions claiming the rideshare driver sped up to the young woman and “spat” on her car – before “threatening to punch” the front passenger “multiple times”.

Available footage doesn’t not show any such actions.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis echoed Mr Smith’s comments, saying the actions of the Didi driver were “appalling”.

“The video published of a rideshare driver verbally assaulting a young woman and damaging her vehicle is appalling, and this behaviour should not and will not be tolerated,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

“Our Passenger Transport reforms passed the lower house of state parliament this week. Once passed, they will give the minister unprecedented power to immediately withdraw accreditation from point-to-point drivers if required – as it would be in this case.

“Our broad reforms will also require cameras in all point-to-point vehicles to ensure in-vehicle safety across the industry – this not only provides security for drivers but enhances the safety of passengers and fellow road users.”
