Woman dies in horror two-car crash at Tweed Heads in northern NSW on Saturday afternoon

A woman has died at the scene of a two-car crash in the Northern Rivers today. Here’s what we know.

A woman has died in a two-vehicle crash at Tweed Heads in the state’s far north.

Emergency services including Tweed/Byron Police District were called to the intersection of Parkes Dr and Ducat St, Tweed Heads after a two-car crash about 2.30pm on Saturday.

The crash involved a small blue sedan and a black 4WD.

A woman believed to be in her 50s was treated at the scene, but could not be revived and died.

An 18-year-old man was not physically injured in the collision, but was taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Specialist police set up a crime scene and a section of road was closed for several hours.

Police have appealed for information as investions continue.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage has been urged to contact Tweed Head Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The fatal crash has occurred as NSW Police conduct Operation Anzac Day statewide.

Double demerit points will be in place until 11.59pm on Tuesday, April 25, coinciding with the end of school holidays and Anzac Day.

Motorists have been warned officers will be out in force during the high-visibility operation.

Police Minister Yasmin Catley said: “In the spirit of Anzac Day, let’s show comradery and look out for each other on our roads by slowing down, driving to the conditions, being patient and not driving under the influence.”

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Tracy Chapman said police were targeting high-risk behaviours such as speeding, alcohol and drug driving, illegal use of mobile phones and not wearing seatbelts.

“The goal is preventing injury and death. Tragically this year, 109 people have died on NSW roads – a concerning increase of 12 deaths compared to this time last year,” she said as the operation began.
