Police have charged three people after twin babies were reported missing from Grafton in northern NSW, triggering a search operation and statewide appeal for information.

A 19-year-old man, 21-year-old woman and a 39-year-old woman have all been accused of taking and detaining a person in company with intent to obtain advantage.

The trio cannot legally be named to protect the identity of the victims who were found safe with relatives in a Toowoomba, Queensland home two days after they went missing.

Police issued a statement appealing for help from the public and media to find the baby brother and sister late last year.

The twins were last seen in Victoria St, Grafton and were believed to be travelling with teenagers, according to police.

“Police are appealing for public assistance as concerns are held for the welfare of twin babies missing from Grafton,” the statement read.

“Police are urging any who has seen the twins … to contact police.”

It was further stated officers from the Coffs/Clarence Police District were conducting inquiries.

Police allege in court documents the 39-year-old old woman “acted to aid” the younger co-accused to “take and detain” the babies.

It’s alleged she knew where the children were, but refused to assist police in their search.

The two younger defendants are due to face Grafton Local Court on April 3, while the older woman is due to appear in the same court on May 1.
