Robert Bungie and Graham Saunders among those arrested during Taree police operation

A 20-year-old allegedly launched an assault on seven cops as they tried to arrest him during a special operation on the state’s mid-north coast, which landed four people in court on a range of charges.

A 20-year-old Taree man allegedly assaulted seven police officers as they tried to arrest him during a special operation.

Robert Bungie was one of four arrested on Wednesday across the Taree area, with local officers assisted by the dog unit and the northern region’s high-risk offender domestic violence team.

Bungie was arrested at a property on Harry Clarke Drive, Purfleet with 22-year-old Shane Baxter, who was also at the property at the time, allegedly hindering police.

Baxter was charged with hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty and breach of bail.

After Bungie’s arrest he was charged with seven counts of assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty without actual bodily harm.
Four officers were allegedly assaulted during the arrest and another three at the police station.
In addition to this he has been charged with a range of other offences including dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm; negligent driving (occasions grievous bodily harm); drive a car without the consent of the owner and aggravated break and enter and steal in company.

Bungie was denied bail and his matter adjourned to April 16.

The Daily Telegraph understands there was an outburst in the courtroom when Bungie was denied bail.

More arrests

Graham Saunders, 31, was arrested at a property on Fisher Street, Taree on Wednesday and taken to Taree Police Station where he was charged with common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, robbery in company and specially aggravated enter dwelling with intent to wound.

In addition, Saunders was charged with possessing or using a prohibited weapon without permit, contravene prohibition/restriction in an apprehended violence order and possess prohibited drug.

He appeared at the local court on Wednesday where he was formally refused bail to appear before the same court on Monday, June 3.

Danny Boyd, 40, was arrested the same day at a property on Valerie Street, Taree and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and contravene a prohibition in an apprehended violence order.

Boyd appeared before the local court and granted strict conditional bail to appear before the same court on Thursday, August 15.
