Paramedics have been unable to save a young driver after the car he was driving slid off a Sunshine Coast road before going down an embankment and crashing into a tree.
Witnesses rushed to help the driver, who was trapped in the car along Petrie Creek Rd, before emergency services arrived soon after the accident happened about 1.10pm on Friday.
Firefighters and police worked to free the man while paramedics treated him for critical injuries.
However, their efforts were to no avail.
Queensland Police confirmed the boy, 17, of Bli Bli, died at the scene.
Rosemount resident Laura Murphy described hearing the car’s screeching brakes for about five to 10 seconds as it was coming around a bend before sliding off the road.
“I could hear a car coming up to the corner quite quickly,’’ she said.
She heard the car braking heavily and then the loud sound of it crashing into the tree.
Ms Murphy said she rushed out to the scene on Petrie Creek Road at Rosemount and saw another man racing down to where the car ended up.
The man was in another car on the other side of the road, when he was ‘almost pushed off the side of the road”.
Another woman raced down to assist him as paramedics were called in.
“The front of the car was pushed up against the tree,” Ms Murphy said.
The back of the car was also crumpled.
Ms Murphy said it was raining at the time of the accident which may have contributed to the crash.
“It was spitting at the time it happened.”
