Police have charged 24-year-old Tristan Rowland with murder after he allegedly fatally attacked an older man with a bladed weapon in a suburban street at Coffs Harbour.

Emergency services were called to Kurrajong Street following reports of an assault about 4.15am on Thursday, September 26.

Coffs/Clarence Police District officers found a 41-year-old man suffering critical injuries to his upper body.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man and he was taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital, but later died.

Following an extensive probe, police arrested Rowland on Azalea Ave, Coffs Harbour about 4.20pm on Thursday.

It came after NSW Police launched an investigation under Strike Force Sandbach, with the assistance of State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, Mid-North Coast and Richmond Police districts.

The alleged killer was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station and charged with murder.

Rowland was refused bail to face Coffs Harbour Local Court on Friday.

Earlier, Coffs/Clarence District Crime Manager Detective Chief Inspector Guy Flaherty said it was believed the men knew each other and that a blade was used.

He described the attack as “tragic” and said “the use of edged weapons can dramatically change the circumstances of an altercation”.
