A man has succumbed to injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash just over two weeks ago at a notorious intersection on the state’s Mid-North Coast, sparking outrage from the local community.

The fatality has prompted renewed calls for action at the intersection of Giinagay Way and Valla Beach Road.

About 2.15pm on Tuesday June 17, emergency services were called to the scene following reports a car and motorcycle had collided.

The 71-year-old rider was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and flown to Royal Brisbane Hospital in a critical condition where he later died.

The 81-year-old female driver was not injured, and was taken to Macksville Hospital for mandatory testing.

Officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol, with assistance from Mid-North Coast Police District, established a crime scene which was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

The intersection has been the scene of several serious accidents over the years and the recent fatality has sparked calls from Member for Oxley Michael Kemp for action.

More than 100 residents attended the rally on June 18 for action at the notorious Valla intersection.

This publication spoke with him briefly on Friday afternoon as news broke of the death of the elderly rider.

“I’m shocked and saddened. I am sad for his family and the whole community of Valla,” he said.

More than 100 residents attended the snap gathering on June 18.

“We’ve had crash after crash, and it feels like they aren’t taking it seriously enough. The community is fed up and they want action now before another potentially fatal incident,” Mr Kemp said at the time.

“I’ve done the right thing. I’ve gone through the process, worked in good faith with the agencies involved, and tried to give Transport the time and space to get it right,” he said.

“But we’ve now reached a point where inaction is costing people their safety. The current road design isn’t working, regardless of whether it’s correct.”

The 71-year-old man died on Thursday from his injuries.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or go to nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.

Following the recent crash Transport for NSW announced that a permanent 60 kmph speed limit would now be in place from 500 metres north of Valla Beach Road to the existing 100kmph change point south of Valla Beach Road.

“The change to this one-kilometre section of road will add about 20 seconds to travel times through this area,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.
