An East Lismore man has been charged with animal cruelty after he allegedly bashed a venomous brown snake to death at a Byron Shire park.
Lenard Conroy pleaded not guilty at Byron Bay Local Court on Monday to committing an act of aggravated cruelty on an animal.
The 39-year-old man used a rock to beat, abuse and maim the eastern brown snake, according to court documents.
The offending is alleged to have occurred in Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve on September 11, 2021.
Though brown snakes are considered abundant, they are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975.
Magistrate Karen Stafford told the court the maximum sentence for the charge was two years in jail.
The case has been adjourned to June 27.
