An inmate threatened to attack a woman, saying “you haven’t seen a psychopath yet”, just months before he allegedly held her hostage during a Ballina motel siege.
Dean Kafoa, from Tweed Heads, allegedly held the woman hostage during a six-hour siege at the Homestead Motel on Cherry St, Ballina on July 19.
Court documents state Kafoa was allegedly armed with a knife during the siege and threatened the woman and two officers.
The 38-year-old was charged with taking or detaining a person to obtain advantage causing actual bodily harm, assault causing actual bodily harm, threatening to injure a person to prevent lawful detention, being armed to commit an indictable offence, two counts of stalking or intimidation and breaching an AVO.
No pleas have been entered for these charges.
Kafoa faced Ballina Local Court from custody on Wednesday for a different set of offences which took place before the alleged siege. The offender pleaded guilty to intimidation and breaching an AVO.
Police facts state Kafoa breached an AVO by calling the victim on April 10 from jail using a NSW Corrective Services device.
The woman recorded the call as Kafoa said: “I hate you, I want to jump on your skull”.
“You know you’re mine, you belong to me … I own you. No other c--t can touch you. I’m going to make that clear when I come home,” he said, according to the facts.
“I’ll burn it this time with you in it. You haven’t seen a psychopath yet.”
Kafoa told the victim he would harm her on his release from prison if she upset him.
“You blow it, I’ll play cool and then I’ll just attack ya. I’ll get you when you can’t get away. I promise you on my pop’s grave,” he said.
The victim told police she feared Kafoa would assault her when he was released.
Police facts state Kafoa has a criminal record with domestic violence-related offences, robbery, breached court orders, larceny and deception.
Kafoa will return to court for the intimidation and breaching AVO matters on December 5 and for the siege-related charges on December 11.
