Jamahl Mark Hammond’s jail-term sentence appeal denied after he attacked man with machete at Ballina

A young northern NSW man with a history of property crime and violence who hacked at a man’s arm with a machete outside a sports club has tried to have his penalty slashed.

A northern NSW man with a history of property crime and violence who hacked at a man’s arm with a machete during a dispute on the street has failed to have a two-year jail term quashed on appeal.

Ballina’s Jamahl Mark Hammond, 23, fought to get out of jail after he pleaded guilty at Ballina Local Court to reckless wounding and shoplifting.

Magistrate Kathy Crittenden convicted Hammond and sentenced him to two years jail-time with a year-long non-parole period.

Hammond was due to face Lismore District Court for a bail hearing on March 14.

It’s now clear the appeal fell flat and has been dismissed in the court.

Hammond attacked a man who was unlocking his bike outside the Cherry Street Sports Club early in the evening of May 20 last year.

The man spotted Hammond “riding aggressively directly towards him” on a mountain bike.

“The victim, fearing (Hammond) was going to ride straight into him, or assault him, pushed him off his bike,” police state in court documents.

The pair exchanged words and the man moved to walk away from Hammond.

However, Hammond “advanced towards the victim and pulled a machete in a black sheath out from the waistband of his pants”.

The man put his hands up in defence and Hammond “struck the victim’s left forearm with the machete, causing a deep wound, which immediately bled heavily”.

Hammond rode off on his bike while the victim went into the club to seek help. He was taken to Ballina District Hospital for treatment.

Police were called and officers checked the club’s CCTV footage, identifying Hammond.

Hammond was arrested and taken to Ballina Police Station a week later.

Police added in the documents that Hammond had “an extensive history of property crime and violent offences”.

He remains behind bars.
