A new case of Covid-19 has been detected in Northern NSW, health authorities have confirmed.

Goonellabah Public School will be closed from Thursday, September 16, after it was confirmed on Wednesday a person with Covid-19 attended the school on Monday.

Northern NSW Local Health District acting chief executive Lynne Weir said known contacts of the positive case were being contacted to immediately get tested and self-isolate.

“A case of Covid-19 has this afternoon been confirmed in the Lismore area,” she said.

“Investigations into the source of the case are continuing.”

She said the infected person attended a school in Goonellabah on Monday, which was the first day schools were back for face-to-face learning after lockdown lifted at the weekend.

“Anyone with even the mildest of symptoms of Covid-19 is urged to get tested and self-isolate until a negative test result is received.”

The education department confirmed the affected facility was Goonellabah Public School, which will be closed “effective immediately until further notice”.

A department spokesman said cleaning and contact tracing was under way “after a member of the school community tested positive for Covid-19”.

The out-of-school-hours care at the school will also be closed and all staff and students have been asked to self isolate.

“NSW Health has requested anyone who has been unwell or if you develop any symptoms such as a fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss of smell/taste, muscle/joint pains, diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting or extreme tiredness to be tested at one of the COVID-19 testing clinics,” the spokesman said.

“NSW Education will continue to work closely with NSW Health to ensure the health and safety of all students and staff is maintained.”
