An empty field in the lower Clarence could soon be home to a sprawling rest stop for drivers including a 24/7 fuel station, tourist information, three restaurants and children’s play area.

The Hargreaves Property Group has lodged $10.2 million plans with Clarence Valley Council for the construction of a service centre at Schwonberg St, Townsend.

According to the developer, “there is a legitimate need” for the Maclean highway service centre.

The three hectare site is wedged at the corner of Schwonberg and Goodwood streets.

The land, which is currently a patch of grass, has been unused since 2010 when a sewerage treatment plant on the site ceased operation.

It is about 2.6 kilometres from Maclean Post Office and within a 30 minute drive of Yamba and Brooms Head.

The centre would operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The development is due to include more than 75 car and 25 heavy vehicle parking spaces and four electric vehicle charging stations.

Traffic would access the centre from Goodwood St from the Pacific Hwy.

Have your say on the proposal up until November 13.
