A property developer has stepped up to the plate to whittle away at Coffs Harbour’s entrenched housing shortage crisis with plans to build five affordable townhouses.

A development application has been lodged with City of Coffs Harbour for the well-positioned site at 16 Avenue St.

The applicant is Borsato T Family Trust and the estimated cost of the capital works is $1.265m.

The old timber frame home on the rectangular site will be demolished as will a brick front boundary fence, while five trees will be removed.

In their place will be the fresh build of five contemporary design three-bedroom brick veneer two-storey townhouses.

Each will have a single car garage and access to their own private alfresco and courtyard areas.

“The proposed townhouses will complement the streetscape, being two-storey residences similar to other existing residences and adjacent townhouses in the street and being of a design that isn’t imposing,” Gavin Welsh Drafting states in the planning documents.

The 1200 square metre site is zoned medium density residential and is just two blocks from the Brelsford Park recreational precinct.

The proposed build is one of a number of developments touted for inner city Coffs Harbour, including another string of townhouses a stone’s throw away in Bonville St.

Coffs Harbour was one of just four regional locations singled out by Homelessness NSW in its latest report.

“The rising cost of living and a dire shortage of affordable rental homes is fuelling a homelessness crisis across NSW,” the organisation’s CEO Trina Jones said.

“Frontline services are so overwhelmed they can only help half the people who present to them and must make heartbreaking decisions about who to turn away.”

The development application for 16 Avenue St is on public exhibition until July 2.
