A Coffs Harbour man convicted of supplying drugs had a troubled childhood and later “re-engaged” with his award-winning farm where police found stashes of ammo, a court heard.

Dain Anthony Mavin’s lawyer told Coffs Harbour Local Court the ammunition found by officers was not his client’s and instead belonged to “shooting parties” using the property.

Mavin, 43, was “clean” after a long history of substance abuse, lawyer Abbas Soukie said.

“His future hangs in the balance”, Mr Souki said when Mavin was sentenced on Wednesday.

Police raided Mavin’s Dirty Creek property just north of Coffs on July 28 last year, where they found a small bottle containing 1.5 grams of the semisynthetic hallucinogen lysergide.

Officers also found a box of ammunition in a shed’s laundry area, on three quad bikes and in a worker’s house on the farm.

Mavin pleaded guilty to supplying prohibited drug greater than indictable but less than commercial quantity and possessing ammunition without licence/permit/authority.

Mr Soukie told the court there was no indication Mavin was involved in organised crime and no “books” or “ledgers” were found.

The lawyer said the ammo found on Mavin’s farm was “not his” and “shooting parties” visited the property.

The court heard Mavin had re-engaged with the farm, employed “local talents” and been awarded prizes by City of Coffs Harbour council.

Mr Soukie said Mavin partially left home at age 11 and used drugs by the time he turned 12.

Magistrate Theresa Hamilton said she acknowledged Mavin’s early exposure to domestic violence and drug abuse.

She told the court Mavin appeared with a limited history of drug offending and a sentencing assessment report noted the positive influence of a new partner.

Mavin was sentenced to a 15-month intensive corrections order and 180 hours of community service. He was convicted without further penalty for the ammunition offence.
