Casino fatal pedestrian crash: Charles Torrens charged with drink driving, dangerous driving

A 73-year-old woman has died after being fatally struck by an alleged drunk driver in the state’s far north. A second woman remains in a critical condition.

A 73-year-old woman has died after being struck by a car allegedly driven by a drunk driver at Casino with a second woman, aged 74, in a serious condition at hospital.

At 2pm on Friday April 14, investigators were notified that the 73-year-old woman had died in Gold Coast Hospital.

Charles John Torrens, 57, appeared at Lismore Local Court on Friday on seven charges, including aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death, High Range drink driving and cause bodily harm by misconduct. No pleas have yet been entered.

Emergency services were called to Barker St, Casino after two women were struck by a Toyota Camry sedan about 11am on Thursday.

Emergency services were called to Barker Street, Casino around 10.50am Thursday, April 13 following reports two women had been hit by a Toyota Camry sedan. Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics administered CPR to one of the women, aged 73.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter medical team and road Paramedics treated her at the scene for multiple injuries before flying her to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical, life-threating condition.

A 74-year-old woman was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a serious condition.

Torrens underwent a roadside breath test, which allegedly returned a positive result. Police allege a secondary analysis returned a reading of 0.155.

He was arrested and taken to Casino police station.

Torrens did not apply for bail and it was formally refused. The matter will return to court on June 14.
