A woman from a small Mid-North Coast town has been fined for making a harassing call to a major Sydney synagogue.

Ann Cooper from Hyland Park near Nambucca Heads has pleaded guilty to using a phone to menace, harass or offend.

About 4.45pm on Friday January 17, Sydney City Police Area Command officers received a report of an harassing call being made to The Great Synagogue, an Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Sydney’s CBD on Castlereagh St, on New Year’s Eve last year.

Police commenced an investigation into the incident and about 3.15pm on Thursday, officers arrested Cooper, 61, at a home in Hyland Park.

She was taken to Macksville Police Station and charged.

Cooper was refused bail to appear before Kempsey Local Court on Friday where she pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined $800.

The NSW Police Force takes hate crimes seriously and encourages anyone who is the victim of a hate crime of witnesses a hate crime to report the matter to police through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or through Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.

The synagogue opened in 1878 and is the oldest jewish congregation in Sydney.
