A Taree man who made wild threats to stab a family dog in the throat, as well as stab his girlfriend’s father with a fishing knife and watch the man’s body float away, has been sentenced.

Bodie Everett spent four weeks remanded in custody following his arrest on May 20.

He assaulted his girlfriend and threatened to kill her and other family members, telling them he would “get a gun from his mate”, according to court documents.

Everett was then bailed and sentenced in Taree Local Court on Monday.

The 24-year-old labourer pleaded guilty to common assault, stalking and intimidation and two counts of possessing a prohibited drug.

A number of other charges, including taking or detaining a person with intent to gain advantage and having goods in custody expected of being stolen, were withdrawn.

Everett faced court with the victim of the assault and her mother appearing to offer support.

Everett and the victim had been in a problematic relationship for several years and were living at the victim’s family home in Taree at the time of the assault on May 18 last year, the documents state.

The couple were in a bedroom when a discussion became heated and Everett got close to the victim’s face and yelled “I’m done with you, it’s over between us”.

He pushed her head into the back of the bed and demanded she “get up now”.

The following day the victim ended the relationship and published a photo on Facebook.

An angry Everett called her and said he would get the gun and kill the woman and her family.

He also threatened to stab family dachshund “Malibu” in the throat and to use a fishing knife to stab the victim’s father, throw his body in the river and watch it float away.

When another family member took the phone, Everett said “make her pull her head in”.

Police were called and arrested Everett the next day.

During the arrest, officers found one 1.5 kilogram stash of cannabis and another containing 141g.

Everett’s lawyer told the court his client no longer drank alcohol, which he described as the “volcano” that triggered much of the offending.

It was also heard in court Everett had obtained a prescription for medical marijuana.

Everett was convicted and sentenced to a 12-month conditional release order.

He was ordered to be of good behaviour and to abstain from drugs and alcohol.
