Adam Patrick Wright faces Ballina Local Court pleading guilty to high-range drink driving

A Ballina Shire man was caught behind the wheel with a soaring blood alcohol reading when police spotted his worrying manner of driving.

A Wollongbar man was caught drink driving at more than five times the legal limit when police spotted his car driving slowly, swerving and nearly hitting a concrete median strip.

Adam Patrick Wright faced Ballina Local Court pleading guilty to high-range drink driving.

Police spotted the 27-year-old’s Honda Civic driving on River St in Ballina about 2.30am on January 23, 2021.

The Honda was travelling “well below” the speed limit and “struggled to maintain its positioning within the lane”.

Officers noticed the vehicle “almost colliding with the concrete median strip” and continually hitting the cat’s eye road studs separating lanes.

Wright was pulled over, breath tested and returned a positive blood alcohol reading.

“While dealing with police, Wright was very impaired by alcohol,” the documents state.

Wright was arrested and taken to Ballina Police Station.

He returned a follow-up blood alcohol reading of 0.238.

Police state: “Wright’s actions posed not only a risk to himself but a risk to the community.”

Defence Lawyer Tom Ivey told the court on Thursday that Wright drove home because he had work early the next day.

Magistrate Karen Stafford said she could not believe Wright drank so much on a work night.

The case was adjourned for sentencing on April 27.
