Baby boy, girl among five hurt as truck explodes in crash

A man and a girl are fighting for life and a baby boy was hurt in an explosive collision between a small hatchback and prime mover at Maryborough.

Police said a Suzuki Swift was travelling northbound on the Bruce Highway about 5.40pm on Thursday, when it crashed with a prime mover travelling the opposite direction at Aldershot, north of Maryborough.

Locals reported there was torrential rain and wild winds around the time of the crash.

The impact subsequently caused the truck to catch fire.

Queensland Ambulance said five patients were assessed on scene.

The first patient was the driver of the truck, a male in his 40s, who sustained a lower limb injury and declined transport to hospital.

The second patient, a female in her 20s from the other vehicle sustained upper and lower limb injuries and was taken in a stable condition to Hervey Bay Hospital.

The third patient, a young girl, sustained head, limb and chest injuries and was taken in a life-threatening condition.

QAS said the fourth patient was a man his 30s who sustained a significant head injury and was also in a life-threatening condition.

The fifth patient was a baby boy who sustained a head injury but was listed as stable.

Shocking images emerged from the scene of the catastrophic crash near Farrel Bridge at Saltwater Creek.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said four people, including a 12-month-old infant, had been taken to Hervey Bay hospital.

The highway was closed in both directions, with diversion put in place, while investigations were carried out into the cause of the crash.

It has since been reopened.

A second crash occurred on the Bruce Highway near Marybough at 8.50pm.

A spokeswoman from the Queensland Ambulance Service said one stable patient was treated in the wake of the Glenorchy crash.

QAS later reported a four vehicle crash at Elliot about 8.24pm on Childers Road.

Paramedics assessed three patients on scene, including a female in her 40s, a male in his 20s and a man in his 70s. They were taken to Bundaberg Hospital in a stable condition.
