Two dead, another fighting for life after major highway crash

Four people have died in three separate accidents on southern Queensland roads across Sunday, with a driver arrested over a crash that claimed the lives of two people northwest of Brisbane.

The male driver of a four-wheel-drive has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after a head-on crash claimed the lives of two people northwest of Brisbane on Sunday.

Police allege the 26-year-old man’s Mitsubishi Pajero station wagon was travelling west on the D’Aguilar Highway at Wamuran, south of Woodford, just before 3pm when it crashed into a Ford Everest station wagon travelling in the opposite direction.

The passengers in the Everest, a 58-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman, died at the scene.

The 57-year-old female driver of the Ford Everest was flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Pajero driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment, where police interviewed him.

Speaking at the scene of the fatal crash, QPS Inspector Craig White said: “the driver of the westbound vehicle has been arrested for [allegations of] dangerous driving”.

No charges had been laid early on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, a 56-year-old man died when his Ford Fairlane hit a power pole north of Brisbane on Sunday.

The crash happened at the intersection of Buchanan Rd and Northerly Ave, Morayfield, about 5pm.

He was trapped in the vehicle for some time and died at the scene.

And a 37-year-old man died in a two-vehicle crash at Silverleaf near Murgon in the South Burnett region on Sunday morning.

The crash happened about 9am on Bicks Rd. A 48-year-old woman was injured.
