The high-profile owners of the Berserker home where a 20-year-old was shot in the chest at the weekend can be exclusively revealed as the Rockhampton Jockey Club.

Police have said the man was shot through a house door on Sunday morning in what they allege was ‘a targeted incident’, but are unsure whether he was the ‘intended target’.

Rockhampton Jockey Club chief executive officer David Aldred said while they rented out the Reaney St house near the racecourse privately, the shooting was unrelated to the club or anyone at the club.

Mr Aldred would not comment on the police investigation.

It is not believed to be linked to other shootings this year.

Two men have been charged in relation to two Peter St, Berserker shootings in February and March and another man has been charged after he allegedly shot at a man known to him on Cambridge St.

The man shot on Sunday discharged himself from the Rockhampton Hospital ICU on Monday, May 26.

Officer in Charge of Rockhampton Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) Senior Sergeant Kevin Mawdsley said it was unclear to investigators “whether the person or persons targeted in this incident were the occupiers of the residence”.

“We don’t have someone going around shooting up houses at random,” Det Sen Sgt Mawdsley said during a press conference on Monday.

“(The man shot) is not a permanent occupier of that dwelling however he is an associate or friends with one of the occupiers who lives there.”

He said investigators had not had much of an opportunity to speak to the man, however they would like to speak to him as a priority.

“The other occupiers of the dwelling have been somewhat co-operative with us, however we intend on re-engaging with them so we can progress the investigation,” Det Snr Sgt Mawdsley said.

“The information we have is that he was inside the dwelling and that the gunfire has gone through a rear door and he was on the other side of the door.

“It’s very fortunate in the sense he wasn’t directly shot.

“What’s unclear to us is who was the intended target of this incident.”
