Six elite Queensland schools are charging parents more than $30,000 a year in tuition fees, with at least one of the schools on track to hit the $40,000 mark within the next three years.
Brisbane Boys’ College (BBC) in Toowong has retained its standing as one of the state’s most expensive schools, after it revealed its fees for non-boarding students would jump to $34,500, including levies, next year - up from $29,436 this year and $27,380 in 2023.
BBC had increased their fees on average 7 per cent year on year since 2023 and if fees continue on the current trajectory will reach $40,000 by 2027.
Other private schools from across the state have also started releasing their 2025 fee schedules, with costs rising 6.03 per cent on average - slightly above the national average - and 0.44 per cent higher than in 2023.
The hike is well above the year-on-year inflation rate, which according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, was sitting at 2.1 per cent in October.
It also means Brisbane private school prices are edging closer to some of their prestigious interstate counterparts, including Geelong Grammar in Victoria, which is Australia’s most expensive school and will charge $52,240 a year for senior day boarders from 2025.
Sydney’s Cranbrook School is yet to release its 2025 fees but in 2024 parents were being charged $46,497 for senior students.
There are now at least six schools who charge above $30,000, with St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, Somerville House and St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School all lifting costs over the $30,000 mark for 2025.
Both Brisbane Girls Grammar and Brisbane Grammar school are yet to release their 2025 fee schedule, but are already charging above $30,000 - $30,054 and $32,760 a pop, respectively.
Marist College in Ashgrove increased their fees by 5.8 per cent for 2025 ($16,510 for seniors), while Redeemer Lutheran College at Rochedale jumped 6.3 per cent ($16,4440).
In a statement to The Courier-Mail Loreto College principal Kim Wickham confirmed the board had approved a 6.9 per cent fee increase at the Coorparoo school next year.
“This rise covers the growing costs of enhancing our educational programs, facilities and resources, including additional academic offerings, an expanded curricular and co-curricular program, and increased staffing for 2025,” Ms Wickham said.
Jack Stevens from Edstart, a company that works with schools to manage fee processes, said it was anticipated that most private schools would put up fees next year.
He said “staffing costs” were the biggest reasons why prices were rising.
“Those fee increases are really just reflecting the increases to costs that these schools will face again as we move into 2025, ” he said.
