Pedestrian killed in horror crash on Kessels Rd, Coopers Plains

Police are investigating whether the driver of an out-of-control car that killed a woman on her morning jog was an unaccompanied L-plater. It comes as a nearby resident recounts the moment her body was found.

Police are investigating whether the teenage driver of an out-of-control car that rolled off a busy Brisbane road, hitting and killing a woman in her 30s on her morning jog, was an unaccompanied L-plater.

It is understood police are investigating whether the 19-year-old driver was speeding when he lost control on Kessels Rd, Coopers Plains, shortly before 5am on Thursday.

The young man, from Tingalpa, was believed to have been driving to work when his Mitsubishi Lancer overturned for some distance, spreading debris along the road before coming to rest in a ditch.

The car, after striking the woman, smashed through a fence and destroyed a power pole.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene where the man was found outside his car with an injury to his arm.

It is understood a search of bushland along Kessels Rd located the woman several metres from the footpath.

Her injuries were extensive and she could not be saved.

Nearby resident Joel McCallum was woken by the sound of the crash. “It sounded like it was on my driveway,” he explained. “One of his tyres exploded, and I know that because parts had been found in the Hungry Jacks car park across the road.”

But he said he didn’t realise a pedestrian had been hit until he reviewed his own home’s security footage, which showed a person walking.

“I rushed back to the scene to notify the police,” he explained.

“She was found in the embankment next to the pathway. It was a bit uncomfortable, seeing the pedestrian that way.”

Mr McCallum said traffic incidents happen on Kessels Rd “almost every week”.

“When you live on this road, it is a regular occurrence. No one slows down,” he explained.

“Just the abuse and the horns you hear on the road has doubled in the past six to twelve months.”

Another resident who heard the “bang” in the early hours of Thursday morning said cars could be heard roaring down Kessels Rd frequently.

“One car might’ve driven over debris, because stuff was flying all over the road. There was an ambulance there almost immediately, I was about to call triple-0, but an ambulance by chance may have come across and pulled in,” she said.

“Crashes are quite frequent over the past year and half, you hear them racing along here, a lot of motorbikes.

“But this intersection and this corner are super dangerous.”

Police on Thursday were attempting to find the drivers of three cars seen driving behind the Lancer shortly before the crash, in the hope they might be able to help with their investigations.

“Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal single-vehicle traffic crash in Coopers Plains this morning,” a statement said.

“Initial information indicates a Mitsubishi Lancer struck a pedestrian on the footpath near the intersection of Kessels and Riawena roads around 4.50am.

“The driver and sole occupant, a 19-year-old Tingalpa man, was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The pedestrian, a woman in her 30s, sustained critical injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.”

The driver was released from hospital about midday on Thursday.

Police said the three cars, captured on CCTV from a nearby house appeared to be a sedan and two utilities.

Footage released by investigators showed the darkened street illuminated by the headlights of the passing vehicles, the Lancer driving in front of the three other cars.

The busy road was closed for some time as forensic crash investigators scoured the scene.

The Lancer, which had significant damage to its front end and roof and its airbags deployed, was towed from the road at 9.40am.

No charges have been laid.
