A Lowood man, 74, has died after a car caught on fire on a major highway west of Brisbane.

A man has died after a car caught on fire on a major highway west of Brisbane.

Emergency services responded to a serious two-vehicle crash on Brisbane Valley Highway at Ironbark near Ipswich about 10.10am on Wednesday.

Initial investigations show there was a crash between a Mitsubishi Triton and Pajero Sport before the Mitsubishi crashed into a tree.

Paramedics assessed two patients, the driver of the Mitsubishi, a 74-year-old Lowood man sustained life-threatening injuries and died at the scene.

The driver of the Pajero, a 60-year-old Esk man, was taken to Ipswich Hospital in a stable condition.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing, and police are asking for anyone with information or relevent footage to come forward.

The Brisbane Valley Highway was closed to all traffic for some time and motorists were urged to avoid the area.
