Surf champ Mick Fanning has taken his young son for his first surf in a touching tribute to his late mate, Olympic snowboarder Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin, on the first anniversary of his tragic death.
Pullin, 32, a triple Olympian and two-time world champion, died after suffering a shallow water blackout while free-diving on the Gold Coast’s artificial reef at Palm Beach on July 8 last year.
Surfers and snowboarders around Australia took part in a ‘Shred For Chumpy’ tribute on Thursday to mark the anniversary of his passing.
Fanning, who was good friends with Pullin and his partner Ellidy Vlug, posted an Instagram photo of him and his fiance, Breanna Randall, taking their 11-month-old son Xander for a surf as part of the ‘Shred for Chumpy’ commemoration.
“Today marks the first anniversary for @alexchumpypullin so we went and #shredforchumpy,” Fanning posted.
“It also marks the first day little Xander rode his first wave. @breeanablue got some good ones too.
“We thought this was the best way to celebrate the larger than life legend that is @alexchumpypullin. Miss ya brother.
“Much love to @ellidy_ and the Chumpy family.”
The post was liked and commented on by followers including pop star Amy Shark.
