The Gold Coast building sector is mourning the death of developer Tye Alroe.
The experienced builder, who was the CEO and founder of Alroe Constructions, died suddenly of a heart attack while exercising at Burleigh Heads’ Forever Fitness Gym on Tuesday afternoon.
He collapsed after feeling unwell and could not be revived by emergency services workers.
He was 39 years old.
Mr Alroe is survived by his partner Nikki, daughter Poppy, his mum and dad, Vicki and John, and his sister Courtney.
Friend and industry figure Steve Hunt paid tribute to the young builder, describing him as a “rising star”
“Tye was an exceptional businessman, and an even better bloke,” he said.
“He was one of the rising stars of the Gold Coast development industry and was very well respected by all within the industry, including builders, tradespeople and contractors.
“The industry is devastated by the untimely passing of such an industry go-getter.”
Hundreds have paid tribute to Mr Alroe on social media, including his sister Courtney Alroe.
“He truly was one of the kindest humans you could ever meet, generous, loyal, and full of heart,” she wrote on Instagram.
“He always wanted the best for everyone around him and gave so much of himself to his family, friends, and community.
“RIP beautiful brother.”
Melissa Schmorl said Mr Alroe was a “genuine, kind-hearted person”.
“His passion for every project was incredible, he poured so much care into the future, he was shaping for the people who would one day call those places home,” she wrote on Facebook.
“The property industry has lost a truly special leader.”
Real estate agent Matt Nielsen said Mr Alroe touched the lives of so many with his “caring and funny nature” and “strong work ethic”.
“RIP to my beautiful friend, brother and business partner,” he wrote on Facebook.
“He was respected by so many and one of the greatest mates one could ever have.
“Blessed to have the eight years of journey with you my friend.
“I’ll miss you til the day I die.”
Mr Alroe was born in 1986 and grew up in Queensland before being signed to the Melbourne Storm at age 19.
However he never made his NRL debut, instead going into construction where he worked as a carpenter and bricklayer.
In 2012, following four years of running his own carpentry business, the then-26-year-old founded Alroe Construction, which he ran until his death this week.
“My first job in construction taught me the importance of hard work, resilience, and immersing myself in every aspect of the construction process – I learned quite quickly the significance of having a strong work ethic,” he said in an interview earlier this year.
“I am really grateful for where I am today. Alroe has grown into a strong, trusted company, and I’m really proud of the work we’re doing.”
Earlier in 2025 he was described as “one of the Gold Coast’s leading boutique developers” who had a “turnover of $50 million and a workbook of $185 million”.
Among the projects his company built were Mermaid Beach’s The Finn on Albatross Ave, Habitat in Tugun and Sera at Main Beach.
It currently has one project currently under construction, the $31m Lune project at Main Beach.
According to the company’s website, it was engaged to build the 24-storey Arden on Broadbeach’s Surf Parade which is due to break ground in August.
