A SYDNEY man has been fined $4000 after allegedly making a fraudulent border declaration in an attempt to enter into Queensland today.

The man, 43, presented a fake ID and falsely stated he needed to come to Queensland for essential medical treatment, police allege.

Police said the man was a passenger on a bus that was intercepted and checked at the Griffith St border control checkpoint in Coolangatta on the Gold Coast about 11am Wednesday.

It comes just two days before Queensland borders reopen to all states, except Victoria.

“His declaration indicated he was travelling from New South Wales to Queensland for essential medical treatment,” police said in a statement.

“Police will allege the Sydney man was in possession of false identification, did not require medical treatment and had completed the border declaration fraudulently.”

The man was refused entry into the state and hit with a $4,003 fine for failing to comply with the Covid-19 Border Direction.

Queensland police are warning anyone entering Queensland to complete their border declaration pass honestly.

“Vehicles will continue to be intercepted at random where police will verify declarations with identification,” the statement said.
