LNP Leader David Crisafulli refuses to reveal VAD stance

Queensland’s Opposition Leader has once again refused to disclose his personal feelings on voluntary assisted dying despite ‘considerable time’ spent contemplating it.

Euthanasia: Which states allow Australians the 'right to die'?

David Crisafulli is refusing to reveal his personal stance on voluntary-assisted dying, despite having read the proposed laws which were introduced about two months ago.

The Opposition Leader, who said he had spent considerable time contemplating it, urged MPs to take the matter seriously and read the Bill properly.

But he is still refusing to reveal his own views, saying he wanted the parliamentary committee process to take place and for Queenslanders to voice their opinions.

He said it was up to the MPs to decide how they wanted to vote.

It comes as the Opposition Leader said this weekend’s LNP Convention would be one of the biggest tests of his leadership, after he pushed for mammoth reforms earlier this year.

“I’m not walking away from it,” he said.

“I’ve said from day one that I intend to lead the reform of my side of politics and I intend to make us a strong, centre-right political movement.

“I haven’t walked away from the fact that I do believe there needs to be change and we need to make sure that we are in a position to gain the trust of Queenslanders.

“If we can get our house in order, we can bring the sort of government that Queensland deserves.”

But Mr Crisafulli would not weigh into the Constitution Review Committee’s proposal that would keep the party’s powerful President’s Committee – despite him having called for it to be dismantled.

The Courier-Mail revealed this week that the CRC had instead recommended the state parliamentary leader be added onto the committee, alongside two regional chairs.

“I’ll make my comments known to the members and then I’ll be happy to explain exactly my position across the board,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“I think it’s fair and reasonable that I give the membership the opportunity to vote and debate it, but I have been very upfront about my view on what a good, centre-right political movement looks like and it starts with the membership.

“I acknowledge by virtue of the fact it’s on the agenda that clearly across the board people see that there is a mood for change.”
