The LNP’s powerful President’s Committee won’t be dismantled like David Crisafulli wants, but instead have the state parliamentary leader and two regional chairs placed on it, under sweeping changes proposed for the party’s constitution.
As part of his push for “monumental” reform within the party, Mr Crisafulli earlier this year slammed the Committee as being “counter intuitive” and having incredible power.
But while some party branches wanted the Committee abolished, The Courier-Mail can reveal the Constitution Review Committee (CRC) has recommended the state parliamentary leader or their representative and two regional chairs be placed on it.
“This change gives effect to recommendations 1, 2 and 4 of the State Election Review 2020 authored by Senator Paul Scar and Mark McArdle,” it reads.
It also recommends that the party’s State Executive elect the regional chairs.
Proposed Constitutional amendments will be debated this Friday at the LNP Convention in Brisbane, which is expected to be one of the largest to date.
While some branches wanted the Committee scrapped, others pushed for the state parliamentary leader to be added.
One source said while there was strong support to scrap the Committee completely, it didn’t look like it would get debated.
“All that’s on the table is a watered-down version of the current model that will be controlled by a few at the top,” they said.
Another source said the number of submissions about the Committee indicated the “very high level of dissatisfaction” with the way it had been operated in the past.
“All of these proposals for change won’t make a difference if the right people are not in the positions of president and vice president,” they said.
“All it would be doing is treating the symptoms rather than the underlying illness.”
There is expected to be push back from the party’s membership on Friday.
If the CRC’s recommendation is passed, the state parliamentary leader and two regional chairs will join the party’s president, the metro and regional vice presidents, treasurer and the honorary legal adviser on the Committee.
Meanwhile LNP Women has put forward a resolution calling on all state MPs to vote against the euthanasia laws before parliament and instead push for increased palliative care funding.
The Nicklin state electorate council has put forward a resolution urging the Opposition to push for the $247m/year additional funding which Palliative Care Queensland wants.
